Language Delay in Children and Hanen: It Takes Two To Talk
Hanen: It Takes Two to Talk is a cornerstone in speech pathology globally. Today, we delve into some of the basics of this language development approach.

Hello!
Last week at Days Ahead Speech Pathology was a busy one. We had the exciting opportunity to do the Hanen: It Takes Two to Talk course.
In the realm of language development, the Hanen: It Takes Two to Talk approach stands out as an invaluable tool for parents seeking to enhance their child's communication skills. As a speech pathologist, I am excited to share insights into this approach, shedding light on its principles and how it can positively impact the parent-child dynamic, and ultimately, help your child develop their language.
Developed by The Hanen Centre, the Hanen: it Takes Two to Talk program is grounded in the belief that parents are the most important people in their child's life and, therefore, play a crucial role in language development. The approach empowers parents to become active participants in their child's communication journey by providing practical strategies that can be seamlessly integrated into daily life.
The key principle of following the child's lead encourages parents to observe and respond to their child's cues creates a supportive environment for communication. By tuning into the child's interests, parents can tailor interactions to align with the child's motivations, fostering a natural and enjoyable communication process.
As a speech pathologist, I often emphasize the importance of expanding on a child's communication attempts. The Hanen: it Takes Two to Talk approach guides parents in building on their child's language by introducing new words, concepts, and sentence structures in a way that complements the child's current abilities. The program also encourages parents to identify and capitalise on everyday situations to enhance communication. Whether during playtime, mealtime, or daily routines, parents can leverage these moments to promote language development and strengthen the parent-child bond.
As a speech pathologist, witnessing the transformative impact of the Hanen: it Takes Two to Talk approach on parent-child communication is truly gratifying. By embracing the principles of this program, parents become not only advocates for their child's language development but also active contributors to a nurturing and communicative family environment. In fostering a haven for communication, parents lay the foundation for their child's future success in language and beyond.
